Q. I want to sponsor someone who needs help the most. How do you determine who among the children and elderly on your waiting list has the greatest need for sponsorship?
Q. How can I help you in your mission to serve those in poverty, beyond sponsoring a child or elderly person?
A. Although Unbound’s focus is the one-on-one relationship developed through sponsorship, we have many different funds and initiatives that support our work.
Q. I learned through my sponsored friend’s family profile that she sleeps on a straw mat, and I would like to buy her a bed. Is there a way to make an extra contribution for my sponsored friend beyond the $30 monthly sponsorship contribution?
A. CFCA has several funds designed to address special circumstances of sponsored friends and their families. If your friend tells you of a special circumstance through their letters and you want to make a special contribution, contact Sponsor Services for assistance.
CFCA and our field staff will work with your sponsored friend and family to use your contribution effectively. Once your friend’s needs have been addressed, any unused portion of the funds may be used to help another member of your sponsored friend’s family or another person in the CFCA community.
Special needs funds allow you to help address critical needs identified by your sponsored friend or family that go beyond what regular monthly sponsorship can cover. Needs may include medical emergencies, home furnishing items, housing repairs or assistance in times of financial crisis.
Please note that donations for special needs must be handled through Sponsor Services.
For more information, please email email@example.com or call Sponsor Services at (800) 875-6564 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central time.
CFCA sponsors never cease to amaze us with the creative ways they support our work. Mary Arling is a great example of a sponsor using her time and interests in support of young people and families served by CFCA.
When Mary Arling began her Christmas shopping buying sweaters and candles for family and friends, she didn’t know that her holiday shopping would also benefit CFCA sponsored friends around the world.
One day while shopping at Town Center Plaza in Leawood, Kan., Mary found out about a special contest, in which the center would donate $5,000 to one lucky winner’s favorite charity.
To participate, shoppers had to go to the administrative office after each shopping trip and make copies of their receipts, which counted as entries into the contest. Read more

What weíve done together
Even in the face of the economic downturn, we have achieved so much. With your support, weíve helped children go to school for the first time, and weíve helped older youth finish school. Weíve helped mothers give their families nutritious food to eat. Weíve provided roofs for houses, and materials for home repairs. Grandparents receive vital health care, children get to visit the dentist, and communities of CFCA parents are strengthened by the opportunity to learn income-generating skills or start small businesses.
We have partnered with our friends through sponsorship. Weíve also helped through donations to special funds. And through the Sponsorship Assistance Fund, weíve helped fellow sponsors continue their sponsorships during rough times like job loss and health issues.
Good news from 2008
We began 2008 with good news. Together, we reached the $100 million revenue milestone — a testament to the trust sponsors place in CFCA as good stewards. Itís really remarkable that each of us giving about $30 a month can make such a huge impact.
CFCA is also recognized for our commitment to responsible stewardship by three of the leading nonprofit watchdog agencies. We received the highest rating (four stars) from Charity Navigator; we met all 20 of the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Allianceís rigorous Standards for Charity Accountability; and we earned the American Institute of Philanthropyís A+ rating, the only organization listed in the child-sponsorship category to receive an A+.
And another achievement we can all feel especially good about: We will begin 2009 with more sponsors and more sponsored friends being helped than we had a year ago.
