Happy Holidays from CFCA!

CFCA sponsored child

Natali, a CFCA sponsored child in El Salvador.

Happy Holidays, blog readers!

Tuesday, we celebrate Christmas in the United States and at CFCA headquarters in Kansas City. Our office will be closed Dec. 24 and 25 for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

In this season when we celebrate the birth of Jesus more than 2,000 years ago, let us pray for the children of our world.

As Jesus grew from the complete dependency of infancy to embrace his mission as the Christ, may all those we serve be protected and nurtured and loved unto their full potential.

From all of us at CFCA, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Small gifts to send to your sponsored friend

CFCA sponsor, Steve Taylor

Steve Taylor, CFCA sponsor, visited his sponsored friend on a CFCA awareness trip to the Philippines.

By Steve Taylor, CFCA sponsor

Previous blog posts have provided great suggestions (try 18 small gift ideas to send in your Christmas card), and I wanted to add a couple more.

1) Hello USA book series

We wanted a way to describe our home state of Virginia.

I was lucky enough to find the perfect book: Virginia, Hello USA. It is written at a level that anyone would enjoy. The books are for young children ages 2 and older.

Even for sponsored friends who don’t speak English, there are enough scenic pictures and maps to highlight our respective states.

The Hello USA series has books for most every state. The paperback sells for approximately $6.95 and fits in a 9 by 12 envelope, the recommended size for any gifts sent to sponsored children.

I found the book at a local store, and I’m sure you can find it at local bookstores or online. Check it out.

2) USA map

United States map

Being retired military, the first thing that came to mind was a United States map highlighting the various locations where we have lived.

It also provided a resource for our sponsored friends to refer to when we mention other locations.

Advent reflection: Christmas on the practical, everyday level

Father Mark LaneEvery Wednesday during the Advent season, we will post a reflection in hopes that it may help you on your own journey through Advent. This weekís reflection is offered by Father Mark Lane, CFCA preacher.

“Ö Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:45)

When my oldest sister was expecting her first child, I called her close to the end of her last trimester because I had just eaten something that had given me such a pain in the stomach, and I was feeling a deeper sympathy for her situation.

My brother-in-law answered the phone to say she had gone into labor. Read more

‘Pomp and Circumstance:’ Parents graduate in Colombia

Parents of CFCA sponsored children

Parents of CFCA sponsored children stand proudly with their entrepreneurship diplomas.

CFCA believes strongly in the creativity and talents of sponsored families and partners with families throughout the world to unlock their potential.

In Bogota, Colombia, every Friday, leaders from each parents group meet at the CFCA office to participate in a “livelihood projects” class to learn techniques on how to successfully develop their talents and skills into sources of income for their families.

CFCA staffers utilized a local government program focused in the development of professional formation programs.

The main goal is to bring business education to family members of sponsored friends, and have these individuals spread their knowledge to fellow parents in their group.

CFCA staffers have seen many changes in families thanks to this class. Parents have diversified their families’ sources of income and also further developed their skills and talents. Read more

CFCA volunteer hits ‘home run’ in fundraising effort

Bob Meyer, CFCA sponsor and volunteer

Bob Meyer, CFCA sponsor and volunteer

Bob Meyer has volunteered at CFCA headquarters for the past seven years and is dedicated to helping fight poverty around the world.

In addition to volunteering, he’s using his writing talents to help families in poverty realize their dreams for a better life.

Inspired by his love of baseball and a desire to help others, Bob wrote and self-published a book, “Small Town Baseball Ö BIG LEAGUE DREAMS,” focusing on semi-pro baseball in eastern Iowa from the early 1900s to the present. Proceeds from the book are being donated to CFCA and another charity close to Bob’s heart.

Bob has sold more than 600 copies so far, and is planning to donate $1,500 from book sales to CFCA.

“It was the right thing to do,” he said.

Meyer first learned about CFCA sponsorship through a priest visiting his church.

Shortly after beginning their sponsorship of Jeferson in Guatemala, Bob and his wife, Ruth, decided to visit him on a CFCA trip. Read more

‘A blessing in my life:’ Kasey’s sponsorship experience

By Kasey, who sponsors Amelia through CFCA

Amelia, left, and Kasey, right.

Amelia, left, and Kasey, right.

I heard about CFCA through an online search.

I knew I wanted to sponsor through a reputable program, and after extensive research and finding that CFCA’s values lined up with my own beliefs, I knew I had found the right place.

I searched the profiles and determined that a woman named Fabiana needed my help most.

Her story resonated with me. For $30 a month, I could help this elderly widow off of her straw bed on the ground and change her whole life.

When I got her first letter, I cried. I read it over and over and then wrote back saying that, although she thought I was a blessing to her life, she was also a blessing in mine.

The gratitude I felt through her handwritten words spoke to my heart.

I carried them close until about a year later when she passed away. I mourned her passing but rejoiced in knowing that I brought her great comfort in that past year.

CFCA then found me Amelia, and although from a different continent and telling a different tale, I was written into her story. Read more

Advent reflection: ‘God dwells within the human family’

Larry LivingstonEvery Wednesday during the Advent season, we will post a reflection in hopes that it may help you on your own journey through Advent. This weekís reflection is offered by Larry Livingston, CFCA church relations director.

“Cry out with joy and gladness: for among you is the great and Holy One of Israel.” (Isaiah 12:6)

More often than not, living our faith is simply a matter of doing the right thing.

What tends to complicate it is the impressive ability we humans have to con ourselves into not recognizing the right thing when we see it.

In today’s Gospel for the Third Sunday of Advent, John the Baptist is urging the crowd to change their lives in preparation for the coming of the Messiah. Read more
