Every week we offer a prayerful reflection from a member of the Unbound community. This week our reflection was written by Managing Editor Loretta Shea Kline.
Fostering relationships of mutual respect, understanding and support between sponsors and their sponsored friends is central to our mission at Unbound, and prayer plays an important part in those relationships.
In my travels around the world to gather stories, I’ve interviewed numerous children, young adults, elders and family members who said they pray for their sponsors every day. I’ve also talked with sponsors who remember their sponsored friends in prayer.
I’ve been thinking about prayerful connections a lot lately in light of recent natural disasters and acts of violence. In the storms, earthquakes, wildfires and attacks that have devastated and disrupted lives around the world, it offers a measure of comfort and hope to know that people of different backgrounds, circumstances and religions are thinking of and praying for each other.
My family and I were blessed to travel last month to northern California, where we experienced the majesty of Yosemite National Park. There were wildfires near the park, and we could see and smell the smoke. Firefighters from Cal Fire checked in at the same hotel where we were staying, which brought home for us the danger area residents and first responders faced.
Walking the paths and hiking the trails of Yosemite led me to reflect on our interconnectedness with God, nature and each other. I’m thankful that I’m part of a community that honors and encourages those connections.
God of all creation, let us remember in prayer and action everyone affected by wildfires in the western United States. Let us also remember those impacted by other natural disasters and acts of violence. Draw us close as members of your human family. May we walk together on a path to mutual respect, understanding and support. We ask this in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.
