Peter is a 68-year-old man in Kenya who is one of 30,000 elders around the world sponsored through Unbound. Like Peter, these men and women are pursuing better health and nutrition, stabilizing their incomes and enjoying newfound community among their fellow sponsored elders. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing stories of these inspiring aging friends around the world.

Peter spent most of his life working as a funeral assistant in a morgue. He said that people often thought he had a scary job, but he enjoyed it because it reminded him every day how fleeting life is.

Today, Peter is sponsored by Dan and Kathy in New York, and is grateful for his benefits that help him make ends meet after retiring.

“I am happy that Unbound offers support to the needy in my community,” Peter said. “Their lives are refreshed by the fact that Unbound walks with them.”

Esperanza in the Philippines has been sponsored for 10 years and says through Unbound sponsorship, she's experienced things she never has before.

Esperanza is 85 years old and lives in the Philippines. She describes Unbound as a guardian angel and hopes someday she’ll be able to meet her sponsors, Gregory and Megan from North Carolina, in person.

Esperanza uses her sponsorship benefits for food, medicine and other basic needs. She also enjoys the community of peers that she’s met, joking that if it weren’t for meeting other elders through Unbound, she wouldn’t have anyone to borrow a dress from to have her photo taken in!

“I am happy that Unbound offers support to the needy in my community,” Peter said. “Their lives are refreshed by the fact that Unbound walks with them.”

We love talking about our sponsored elders like Peter, Esperanza and others around the world because of what they offer our community — wisdom, love, inspiration, laughter, hope. Over the next few weeks, we’ll share more stories about elders in the Unbound community who amaze and inspire us.

We hope you’ll be inspired, too.
