While some may think of Cancun, Mexico, as a popular tourist spot, others consider it home.
Ana and her family live in Cancun, and although she lives in a beautiful place, life there has been challenging. After her husband suffered a work-related injury he was unable to work for a long time.
“It was a hard time in our lives,” Ana said. “We did not have any income.”
To support her family Ana started a business selling corn on the cob and other snacks on a bicycle cart. On a good weekend she makes about $67.
She wakes up at 5 a.m. every morning to buy corn cobs at the local market. After returning home, she prepares breakfast and the corn she will sell that day.
Ana has two children, Ignacio and Juliana. When Ignacio got sponsored, it helped lighten the financial burden on the family.
“The future of my kids, Ignacio and Juliana, seemed dark,” she said. “I saw their future with many obstacles, but thanks to my son’s sponsor things look better. Thanks to the benefits, we have been able to save enough to make improvements to our home, and our children are in school.”
Through sponsorship, the family received benefits like clothes, shoes, school supplies, food and other items.
Ana’s also become involved in the mothers group in her community. They meet once a month to interact and learn from each other.
“I’m happy I have the chance to learn and increase my abilities, and be a better person,” Ana said. “Sponsorship filled our family with hope because sponsorship came to us when we were most in need. … I see the future of my family with much more hope.”
