Flor starts her day at 4 a.m. She wakes up, brushes her teeth and then grinds corn so her grandmother can make and sell tortillas. She then works as a nanny from 6 until around noon. After that she tries to spend some time with her family before she heads out again for her night classes from 6 until around 10. After class, she takes the bus home and gets ready for bed.
“That’s my daily routine,” she said. “That’s how my beautiful days are.”
Flor is a 19-year-old sponsored youth through Unbound in Costa Rica. After her mother passed away, she and her two siblings went to live with her elderly grandparents. The family’s main source of income is from the tortillas her grandmother sells. Flor said life was difficult before Unbound sponsorship.
“There were really bad days because we didn’t have anything to eat and other days when we did. But always with God’s help we’re able to overcome, conquering any obstacle,” she said. “Now, with Unbound’s help, my life is better. I receive food, clothing and it helps me to continue studying.”
Flor is now in her last year of high school. Her dream is to finish school, find work and support her family. She’s proud of what she’s accomplished.
And she’s accomplished quite a bit. Flor overcame serious obstacles just to attend school. With a hectic schedule, she’s a dedicated student who has put in the extra effort to succeed.
“Never give up, even if you are in a really difficult situation,” Flor said. “You have to trust that you are worthy.”
Poverty and difficult life situations never seem to diminish Flor’s spirits. She remains positive despite all the hurdles in her way.
“Every time I smile despite my odds; it is like trying to delete all the bad moments,” Flor said. “I know that by smiling I’m not going to solve my problems, but at the end you will find a solution. … Always remember to keep a smile on your beautiful face.”
