Visiting sponsored members’ homes is one of the highlights of an Unbound Awareness Trip. On a recent trip to Nicaragua, sponsors were treated to a special musical performance at one home.
We were visiting a sponsored member’s home in the city of Esteli when we met the musical duo Jade. Sadoc, who is sponsored through Unbound, and his friend Randal have been playing together about five years, Sadoc on the flute and Randal on the guitar. They wanted to play a few songs for our visiting sponsors. Sadoc makes his own flutes from PVC pipes. After trial and error, he came up with a flute that astonished us all.
Sadoc, 16, and his mother live in his grandmother’s house. Sadoc told us that his sponsor, Bruce, is a musician and encourages him in his playing.
We were all moved deeply when they started in on their song, and filled this humble home and community with music from Nicaragua, the Andes and beyond.
Sadoc and Randal said they want to continue specializing in the music of Nicaragua, Peru and the Andean region.
After their traditional numbers, they played the Beatles’ “Let It Be” and “Imagine” as their closing numbers for the sponsors.
Thank you, Sadoc and Randal. We are richer for getting to know you, and I will think of you every time I hear soaring Andean music.
