Dominican Republic: Beauty in diversity

Dominican Republic

Join us as we celebrate Geography Awareness Week with National Geographic and friends. This year’s theme “focuses on how geography enables us all to be intrepid explorers in our own way.”

We start with our work in the Dominican Republic.

“Dios, Patria, Libertad.”

“God, Fatherland, Liberty.”

This is the motto of the Dominican Republic, one of the most geographically diverse countries in the Caribbean. As you can see from the photo, children there take pride in their national heritage!

CFCA in the Dominican Republic

CFCA sponsored friends proudly wave the Dominican Republic flag.

Residents enjoy a wide range of scenery, from sweeping mountain ranges to tropical rainforests and semi-desert plains.

Despite the beauty, this vibrant country struggles with widespread poverty and increasing gang violence. According to the World Bank, about 40 percent of the population lives in poverty, which can make it hard for children to go to school.

Our work in the Dominican Republic focuses on education as a way to help children and their families break the bonds of poverty. Children often have learning challenges, so we give teachers additional resources to support those students. Sponsoring a child also provides enrollment fees, technical student training and school uniforms.

The benefit of sponsorship has inspired the whole family in Joselin’s home. Abandoned by her husband, Joselin had to leave school early. She alone now cares for her six children, including Jose, who is sponsored through CFCA.

With Jose in school, Joselin returned to high school to complete her education. Her 20-year-old daughter, Sofia, also has finished high school and would like to go to college! Education is becoming a family legacy.

This is just one of many stories of how people in the Dominican Republic are finding and celebrating liberty – the liberty to build a better life, free from poverty.

CFCA trips

Beyond the monetary support of sponsorship, encouragement makes a difference. Monica, a sponsored youth, met her sponsors, Beridiana and Rafael, during a CFCA awareness trip. They had corresponded for many years.

“You are much more than sponsors,” she told them. “You are like my parents, and I love you.”

Sponsor a child or aging friend in the Dominican Republic! After clicking the link, select “view children” and then choose “Dominican Republic” from the drop-down menu.
