Remembering these wonderful brothers of ours

By Paco Wertin, CFCA CEO

May God’s peace bless you as we remember these wonderful brothers of ours!

Today is the 15th anniversary of the death of some dear members of our CFCA family:

Jerry Tolle, co-founder of CFCA
Carlos Caballero, president of CFCA Spain and
Jesús Pèrez Tapioles, vice president of CFCA/Spain.

They were killed in a car accident in Spain on May 17, 1995.

Jerry had just finished a 40-day CFCA trip to Africa, visiting all the projects on the continent, beginning in Madagascar and ending in Liberia. Carlos and Jesús were taking Jerry from the airport in Madrid to the CFCA office in Valladolid when the accident occurred.

We give thanks to God for each of them, and the way their presence continues to form, guide and energize us.

Please take some time to stop and reflect on the lives of these men whose vision and love helped us to become what we are today.

Here is a wonderful statement from Jerry:

“We feel that CFCA is a dynamic, growing, interacting family of workers, sponsors, volunteers, missionaries, poor children and aging. All are contributing to the co-creation of CFCA, an experience of sharing, of getting to know and love and serve the Lord’s little ones. Each new staff person, volunteer, missionary collaborator, sponsor and supporter is seen and given the opportunity of co-creating our mission.”

Jerry brought many, many gifts and talents to the founding of CFCA. Yet his love for the children and the elderly and the changes that they made in his life would have to be central.

We keep Jerry, Jesús and Carlos, and their families in our prayers of gratitude.

Mark’s Gospel (9:35-37) says it well:

Jesus said to the twelve: ‘If any of you wants to be first, you must be the last one of all and at the service of all.’ Then he brought a little child into their midst and said: ‘Whoever welcomes a child such as this for my sake welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the One who sent me.’

Jerry, Carlos and Jesús, ¡presentes!
