Field Notes Colombia: Dreams of mothers

Recently, Jose Rodriguez, project director for Colombia at CFCA headquarters in Kansas, traveled to Colombia to visit with mothers of sponsored children.

During the workshop, mothers gathered to answer a question: “What is your dream?”

Many women had the opportunity to share what they were interested in pursuing and CFCA had the chance to help them make it happen.

The city of Manchay, Peru.

From the distance, Manchay, Peru appears dirty and desolate.

Small and sometimes rickety houses, cheerfully painted in lilac and blue sit at the base of what appear to be mountains made of dust and rock. Manchay is covered in haze.

But what Manchay lacks in aesthetics, it makes up for in smiles.

Like the big grin on 5-year-old Carlos’ face.

A humble leader motivated me

Colombian sponsored youth


Alfredo, 19, serves as an inspiration to fellow students in Colombia.

Alfredo, 19, is a sponsored youth served by our Cartagena, Colombia, office. He helped with an Awareness Trip earlier this year and met with several sponsors and Bob Hentzen. Alfredo tutors 9th graders in his community, and was inspired even more by his meeting with Bob to continue helping.

Bob’s passion was to build bridges of love and understanding between all people.

As CFCA prepares for the funeral tomorrow of our President and Co-Founder Bob Hentzen, we honor International Day of the Girl. Educating and empowering girls throughout the 21 developing countries where CFCA works was important to Bob and will continue to be part of his legacy.

Taking charge: A mother’s journey of empowerment

Dubis sits in front of her home sharing her story.

Born in Cartagena, Colombia, Dubis now lives in a community south of Cartagena.

She is the mother of two sponsored youth.

Dubis found a new calling when she joined the CFCA mothers group, which meets twice a month.

“Before my sons’ sponsorship, my life was a routine. I would go to work and do the chores at home,” Dubis said.

“I did not go outside a lot and I did not talk with my neighbors.”
