Tomorrow is International Day of Families, and here at Unbound we love celebrating families. In honor of this special day, we want to share Kavya’s story. She started her own clothing store to help support her family.
Before Kavya had her own clothing store, she worried about her family’s financial future. Her husband worked as a driver and his erratic job schedule made it difficult for them to make ends meet.
“The idea of my husband working odd hours and not being paid enough to run a family of four members always had me disturbed,” she said. “I thought I could put my skills of tailoring to work and start a shop of my own.”
That dream became reality in September, 2013, when Kavya opened her store after receiving a microloan through her mothers group. She now sells saris, jewelry, cosmetics, clothing accessories and fabrics.
“Gradually, the business was recognized and there were new customers each day,” she said. “Now I am able to repay the loan with ease.”
Mothers groups in India started a microloan program designed to help parents of sponsored children develop their own way out of poverty – whether it’s a sustainable agriculture project, skills development and training, or a small business like Kavya’s. Members from the group contribute savings each month, which are then matched by their local Unbound project, to create the pool of funds from which the microloans are made.
“I see my business flourish; this makes me happy to have initiated it,” Kavya said. “My children are happy, and I get to give them much more than before.”
Kavya’s oldest son, Abhinay, has been sponsored through Unbound since 2009. Kavya said she’s happy that income from her store is now helping pay for his education.
“I am financially supporting my family, and this gives me a great joy from within,” she said.
She also takes great pride in the high quality of her store’s goods and services, which have become popular through word of mouth.
“We are famous for our designer blouses,” she said, “because they are glamorous with embroidery and sequins!”
