Wisdom of the ages: Yetukuri, 80, from India

Our Unbound communications center in India contributed information for this report.

Yetukuri is an 80-year-old sponsored friend living near Hyderabad, India. She has been sponsored through Unbound for six years.

She lives in a home for the aging where she helps in the kitchen cutting vegetables and washing dishes. She also helps outside with gardening and cutting the grass.

Q. What is your secret for a long life?

A. I do not eat meat or fish. I eat only vegetables.

Q. What advice do you have for young people?

A. When I meet schoolchildren or any other younger ones, I advise them to obey their elders, behave themselves, study, work hard and take care of their grandparents.

Q. What is the most important thing your mother taught you?

A. When I was young, my mother taught me not to involve myself in any gossip or fights, and to be obedient to my elders.

Q. If you could visit anyplace in the world, where would you go and why?

A. I don’t want to go anywhere. I am happy in my home.

Q. Tell us something special or unique about yourself.

A. I like music. I also used to listen Ramayana (a classic Hindu epic) when someone would read to me, since I cannot read.

Q. What’s one thing that has changed from when you were young to the present day?

A. Those days I was very active. I was working in the field, and I would get angry with my co-workers while I was working. But now that anger is not there. I have become more humble. During that time I was cooking for myself, but now I need to depend on someone else.

Q. What’s one thing that has remained the same?

A. A helpful nature remains in me. When someone works, I try to help them by cutting vegetables or washing utensils.

Q. What’s your favorite food?

A. I like plantains, mangos and bitter gourd curry.

Q. What do you like most about Unbound?

A. I feel happy about the help Unbound is giving us for our medicines and food. Also, Unbound staffers visit me and it makes me happy.
