Lisbeth and Fredy are the two artists from Guatemala whose artwork was chosen for CFCA’s 2013 Christmas cards.

Both are proud of their heritage. Read more to find out how they included that heritage in their card designs.

Lisbeth is one of the artists for CFCA’s 2013 Christmas cards. She loves to draw and dreams of becoming a nurse.

1. What was the inspiration behind your Christmas drawing?

I was inspired by the traditions of my town, Comalapa. If you visit a home in Comalapa during the Christmas season, this is what you would see.

The name of my drawing is “Christmas in Comalapa.”

2. What are your hobbies?

I enjoy reading and I love to draw.

I like to read stories, and I like to read about culture and ancient history.

3. Where are you in your schooling?

This is my first year of middle school; later on I would like to study to be a nurse.

4. How did sponsorship change your life?

My father works hard in the fields growing vegetables, and my mother also works very hard making weavings.

My mother has diabetes and needs to buy medicine often. This makes it harder for my family.

Sponsorship is helping us ease our economic struggles, and it has also encouraged me and my family.

Fredy is another artist from Guatemala. Of Mayan heritage, Fredy dreams of keeping that culture alive through its language.

1. What was the inspiration behind your Christmas drawing?

I was inspired by the story of Mary and Joseph looking for shelter in Bethlehem.

They were walking at night, and they needed a lantern with a candle to light their path.

I also drew a bell because their donkey had a bell around the neck.

I drew poinsettia leaves because we traditionally decorate our home with these leaves around Christmas.

2. What are your hobbies?

I take walks in the park … in the forests and in the fields. I relax when I am close to nature.

This is probably my favorite thing to do. I also like to play soccer on weekends.

3. Where are you in your schooling?

I graduated from high school last year. Now, I am studying to become a Cakchiquel (Mayan dialect)-to-Spanish translator.

After this, I would also like to go to college to get a graduate degree in Mayan languages.

4. What other dreams do you have for your future?

My dream is to work in a nonprofit organization as a Mayan translator.

I believe I can give voice to my fellow Mayan people through my work.

I would also like to teach Cakchiquel and other Mayan dialects to students in high school and maybe even college. That’s my dream.

5. How did sponsorship change your life?

I come from a poor family. When I got sponsored, it changed the way I looked at myself.

Sponsorship helped me believe I can do greater things in life.
