CFCA sponsored youth: My journey to success

The CFCA project in Legazpi, Philippines, recently sent us success stories from young adults who were sponsored through CFCA as children.

Here’s one from Roland, who recently finished his final year of college studying secondary education. Congratulations, Roland!

This is a story of an ordinary boy with great dreams and aspirations in life. Through his perseverance and determination, he made great achievements that made his parents proud to call him their son. — Roland, a former CFCA sponsored youth

At a young age, my siblings and I learned the harsh reality of life that if we did not pursue our studies, we would not have a chance for a more comfortable life.

I excelled in the academic field and joined dancing competitions inside and outside school.

In April 2000, I was invited to perform an intermission number at a CFCA event.

A priest who was at the event advised my mother and me to apply at CFCA to become a sponsored friend.

With my mother’s constant prayers, I officially became a member of CFCA the following month.

My sponsorship brought a lot of changes, not only for me but for my family as well.

My educational needs, from school supplies to bag, uniform and educational expenses, were covered by my sponsorship, which lessened my parents’ financial worries.

It wasn’t just a financial change. I grew more confident and self-assured because the sponsorship provided me with clothing, recreation activities, health care and values formation.

All these things helped me develop into a more productive and God-fearing individual. My sponsor also encouraged me to strive harder in my studies.

My high school life was the point of my life where I found my identity, acquired principles and shaped my character.

I represented my school in different contests and helped my school with extracurricular activities, like choreography and decorating for events.

My high school teacher noted me as a reliable and diligent student. My enthusiasm in my academic pursuit was even greater in my secondary education.

With that, I was chosen as the class valedictorian of the 2008 graduates in my school.

After my high school graduation came another challenging chapter in my life — my college education.

I decided to follow my passion, and I pursued a bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education.

During my college life I encountered major trials, which tested my patience and determination.

I experienced success and failures, which molded me into a responsible and humble man.

I received a college diploma with flying colors, and I was graduated as cum laude.

I recently passed the licensure examination for teachers, and I am fulfilling my noble goal of teaching.

I offer all my triumphs, first to my parents and siblings who helped and raised me to be a good man and supported my needs in all aspect of my life.

Second to my sponsor and CFCA, who served as a big help toward fulfilling my dreams.

And lastly, to God, who gave me the strength and ability to overcome life’s challenges and become a successful person.
